Weekday Science Series: Night-Time Glider: The Elusive Flying Squirrel

DATE: Tuesday 3/23/27   TIME: 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.

Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults.

Program Description: Although usually abundant in hardwood forests, southern flying squirrels are seldom seen by humans because of their nocturnal activity. Learn about their natural history and opportunities to volunteer for up-close observation during winter box checks in southeast Ohio. Guest speaker Dr. Donald P. Althoff, Certified Wildlife Biologist and Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Rio Grande, will share what he has learned while monitoring southern flying squirrels in southeast Ohio.

About the Presenter: Dr. Donald P. Althoff is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Rio Grande.  His hometown is Gahanna, Ohio, and takes great pride in being a lifelong Buckeyes and Yankees fan.  He earned his B.S. in wildlife management from The Ohio State University, M.S. in Wildlife Sciences from the University of Nebraska, and Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology from Pennsylvania State University.  He has conducted research in forest and grassland ecosystems. One of his main endeavors since the mid-1990s has been monitoring southern flying squirrels in southeast Ohio—a species he never laid eyes on until he was in his 40s.  The research focus has included evaluation of an aging technique and the influence of annual hard mast production on local populations.  That effort is a component of the Rio EcoMonitoring Project that provides hands-on learning opportunities for University of Rio Grande undergraduates participating in inventory and monitoring of local flora and fauna.
