Weekday Science Series: Observational Science of Spring Wildflowers

DATE: Tuesday 5/14/24   TIME: 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Registration RequirementsPreregistration required.

Recommended Audience: This program is designed for adults.

Program Description:  Most field biology research is not experimental but is based on the analysis of carefully documented observations. Carol Trosset grew up helping her family establish a small wildflower sanctuary, which her mother documented in great detail for 40 years. In this talk, Carol will explain the kinds of observations needed to collect such data, how she is working with these records to study the life cycles of various species of local wildflowers, and how this data can be used to learn about the local effects of climate change. She will also discuss how she is continuing this research project at the Trosset Wildflower Sanctuary at Gorman Heritage Farm in Evendale.

About the Presenter: Carol Trosset grew up in the 1960s and 70s studying natural history in the Cincinnati area. She earned a PhD in cultural anthropology (another observational science), and spent most of her career doing applied research on higher education effectiveness. Throughout her career she remained active as an amateur naturalist through field trips, volunteer projects, short courses, and nature travel. After retiring, she returned to Cincinnati where she is continuing her family's work conserving and studying spring wildflowers. Carol is the author of The Woods: The Natural History of an Acre in Southwestern Ohio (2023, Ohio Biological Survey), which will be available at the event.
