Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.
Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults. No background experience is required. The training is geared toward educators and volunteer stream monitors, but any adult interested in aquatic resources and water quality is welcome!
Program Description:
This hands-on, feet-wet training covers the basics of stream ecology and the physical characteristics of streams that influence habitat quality. Participants will be trained to use the cQHEI (Citizen’s Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index), which was developed by the Ohio EPA in the 1990’s as a standardized method for citizens to collect water quality data. The cQHEI focuses on physical characteristics of streams that are correlated with the stream’s ability to support diverse aquatic life.
Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to use the cQHEI methodology to assess stream health on their own or as part of a volunteer monitoring program as Level 1 Certified Data Collectors (QDC). Level 1 QDC was designed with educators in mind and is primarily intended to promote public awareness and education about surface waters. This training and certification are appropriate for educators, volunteer stream monitors, and anyone who is interested in learning more about water quality and stream habitat features. Participants will gain access to the cQHEI database under development by Midwest Biodiversity Institute (MBI).
What to Expect:
This training will be comprised of a morning classroom session followed by field training in the afternoon, with a break for lunch in between. The classroom session will cover the basics of stream ecology, a detailed overview of the cQHEI, and the importance of the various physical stream habitat features for aquatic life.
The afternoon session will allow participants to see examples of each cQHEI metric in the stream. Participants will apply what they learn in the classroom, and practice scoring a section of a stream with assistance and feedback from the trainer.
The field component of this training will involve hiking over a mile, including hilly terrain. Participants are expected to get in the stream, at least up to their knees. The stream may be rocky, uneven, and/or slippery.
