Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.

Recommended Audience: This online program is designed for adults.

Program Description: What does it take to protect your home and family? Drinking water for a samll rural Pennsylvania community of 700 people was under threat by the proposed installation of a fracking waste injection well. The community banded together to protect not only their own safety, but also the home of a rare salamander, the hellbender.

In honor of Earth Day on Monday April 22, we will share the story of this community in the documentary film, Hellbent, on Zoom. The film tells this community’s story of activism.  Join us to watch the short film and learn about how their “rights of nature” case played out. Learn how their victory has set a precedent for small towns across the country.

Following the short documentary, we’ll be joined virtually by the filmmaker to discuss how communities can use their voice to protect themselves and the Rights of Nature.  This will be followed by a brief liv broadcast from Thomas More University Field Station Manager Molly Williams, who will show live hellbenders and explain the research underway to support them.
