Foraging Harvest Helpers: Grape Leaf Harvest at Long Branch Farm & Trails

DATE: Friday 5/17/24   TIME: 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.

Intended Audience: Foraging Harvest Helpers are designed for adults and are open to all levels—beginners welcome—but veteran foragers will also find value in the experience.

Program Description: Learn with your hands as you help harvest for future education programs or contributions to our native edible species polyculture farming efforts. Every outing will be a unique blend of gathering and learning together with a community of people interested in foraging.

We’ll follow the seasons during each foraging harvest hike. Every outing will be unique but will be a blend of:

  • Gathering and learning together with a community of people interested in foraging
  • Targeted foraging “shopping list” harvesting during peak season for each species
  • Respectful, ethical, and sustainable harvesting as well as opportunities to give back to the land
  • Botany and ecology through naturalist eyes
  • Identification tips and techniques
  • Applied examples of preparation and preservation
  • Tasting or food samples (part of each outing)
  • Insider updates into the foraging and agroforestry happenings at Cincinnati Nature Center

What to Expect: Dress for weather conditions—as long as it’s safe to be on the trail, we’ll be heading out in all weather conditions. We may cover 1-2 miles or more during each outing, with potential off-trail walking, but will adjust the hike based on the ability of program attendees.

Where to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm and Trails location.  Due to bridge damage, the main entrance is temporarily closed. For this program only – we’ll have you come in our alternate entrance:

  • Give yourself extra time.
  • Set your GPS for 1600 Fay Road (it’s on top of a hill).
    • The entry has some trees around it.
    • Look for farm gates with a small Cincinnati Nature Center sign on the gates.
  • Note that this is a long, single lane gravel driveway with a couple places to pull to the side to allow cars to pass.
    • Do not pull off the driveway (we want to be sure you don’t get stuck in the field).
    • Please park in the main Creekside Parking lot.
  • With the site being closed, there shouldn’t be any traffic coming the other way but do drive slowly anyways, especially on the curves.
  • Long Branch Farm and Trails is officially closed until further notice – other than this program session, please do not visit the site on your own.

Cost: Ticket fees include daily admission.
