Program Description: As autumn sets in, the fields turn to gold, and we’re heading out to harvest. During this program, you’ll:

  • learn to identify various species of goldenrod most commonly found in our region.
  • learn by doing as you safely and sustainably harvest goldenrod.
  • help make goldenrod flower essential oil.
  • be inspired by the cultural and historical significance of the plant whose scientific name, Solidago, means “to make whole.”
  • explore how goldenrod is a fall powerhouse plant for insects.
  • try some goldenrod food samples.
  • go home with a 4-oz jar of goldenrod jelly and some goldenrod soap.

What to Expect:  This is a hands-on class with an optional gathering in the field portion.

  • Our hike will take us upwards of a 1/2 mile, some off-trail (optional). You may opt to skip the gathering in the field portion and stay at the barn.
  • Restrooms are available at the start and end of the program. Restrooms are not available on the trails.
  • This program is mostly outdoors.
  • Program runs rain or shine.

What to Bring: A water bottle and some way to carry it. Scissors and a basket for harvesting goldenrod flowers would be useful.

What to Wear: As this experience will take us off-trail (optional) part of the time, long pants and proper shoes are recommended.
