Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults and intended for anyone interested in gardening with natives. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned gardener, you’ll glean valuable tips from this program.

Program Description: Make your yard attractive and a haven for wildlife by working with nature, not against it. Glean ideas as Cincinnati-based ecological landscaping company, Our Land Organics, shares real world tips on how to use nature’s cues to synchronize yard maintenance practices with the seasons.

In this class we’ll take a seasonal approach to touch on:

  • Spring: Waking Up the Garden
    • Gentle soil care and compost application
    • Pruning deadwood and shaping plants
    • Mulching to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Summer: Supporting Growth and Resilience
    • Strategic watering
    • Identifying and managing pests naturally
    • Cutting back perennials for rebloo
  • Fall: Preparing for Rest
    • Building soil health with fallen leaves
    • Planting native perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and trees
    • Pruning for structure
  • Winter: Reflecting and Planning
    • Mulching to insulate roots
    • Pruning structural branches
    • Planning eco-friendly updates for spring

About the Program Guide: John Hemmerle is founder and managing director of Our Land Organics, an ecological landscape design/build company whose mission is to bring people closer to nature through innovative landscape design and management. John’s work incorporates his experience in urban planning, organic market gardening, and landscape architecture to build a future where we steward our landscapes in harmony with nature. 

What to Expect: This is an indoor talk followed by a question-and-answer session. 

  • Program runs rain or shine.
  • Restrooms are available throughout the program. 

Where to Meet: Registered participants will meet in the auditorium of the Visitor Center at our Rowe Woods location. (4949 Tealtown Road, Milford, OH 45150)

Cost: Ticket fees include daily admission.
