CONSERVATION FIELD STATION: Inspiring Conservation Champions

Cincinnati Nature Center is committed to inspiring communities to care for our environment and to use natural resources in a sustainable manner. Since its inception, Cincinnati Nature Center’s Center for Conservation has made great strides improving the quality of our 1,800 acres of land through invasive species removal, natural ecosystem restoration, and protection of critical wildlife habitat. Our experienced Conservation team takes these principles and techniques out into our community, improving residential, agricultural, and commercial lands. We consider this the true measure of mission impact in our community! Our Conservation team has outgrown its initial location at Groesbeck Estate at our Rowe Woods campus. Plant propagation and research projects need room to expand in both scope and scale. To that end, the Center for Conservation has relocated its core operations to Long Branch, specifically the 212-acre area that once served as a farm. Since relocating, native plant production has increased four-fold, restoration projects have expanded, and field research—in partnership with UC and NKU—is well underway.

Despite these remarkable advances, our current Long Branch facilities are simply not suitable for expanding operations.

The team is limited by lack of shelter, space, and basic amenities. Not to mention, the site is ill-suited for public access, hindering our fundamental aim to connect our community to nature. Our imminent need is for proper, modern facilities for our Conservation team, visiting researchers, members, volunteers, teachers, students, and friends throughout our community who are eager to make a difference learning how to restore, conserve and protect Ohio’s natural areas.

In addition to upgrades for irrigation, sewer hook-up for sanitation, and road and parking upgrades to enable visitor access, features of this 4,000 square foot facility include:

  • New native seed processing barn and storage facility
  • New equipment barn and fuel shed
  • Additional plant cultivation hoop houses
  • Offices, meeting spaces and restrooms
  • Lab workstations
