Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.
Intended Audience: This family-friendly program is designed for adults and/or families with children ages 5 and up with an adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Program Description: Celebrate our native black walnut by helping us gather and process this year’s crop. We’ll head out on the land to hunt for black walnuts and bring them back to the barn, where you can help husk them with our equipment. We’ll crack and taste some cured black walnuts from last year’s crop, touch on black walnut trees’ importance for wildlife, and provide suggestions for culinary applications (and samples!) of this often-ignored gourmet nut that’s right underneath our feet.
Whether you want a unique family-friendly fall harvest experience or are looking to crack the mystery of how and when to gather, cure, clean, and process black walnuts for yourself, this program is for you. We’ll divide into small groups based on your interests.
What to Expect: This is a hands-on class with an optional gathering in the field portion.
What to Wear: Dress in "ok to get dirty" clothes. Walnut hulls sometimes stain. Consider bringing gloves.
Where to Meet: Registered participants will meet at the Creekside Barn at our Long Branch Farm & Trails location. (6926 Gaynor Rd, Goshen, OH 45122)
Cost: Program fees include daily admission.
