Intended Audience: This program is designed for adults. Interested youth ages 10 and up may sign up and attend with an adult.

Program Description: Using bark from a hickory tree, we’ll learn by doing as we craft hickory bark syrup. Unlike sugar maple trees, hickory trees do not yield sap. Instead, loose shags of bark are removed from the tree, cleaned, toasted, then used to make bark tea, which is sweetened and cooked down into syrup.

While we wait for the bark to roast and syrup to cook down, we’ll share some uses for hickory bark syrup and whip up some persimmon pancakes and venison Goetta. 

What to Expect:  This is an entirely indoor cooking program in a small group. We’ll have a group of 10-12 people in an enclosed catering kitchen space.

• We’ll be standing for the most part, but will have chairs available.
• Krippendorf Lodge is accessible for wheeled assistive devices. 
• Restrooms are available throughout the program.
• This program is completely indoors.
• Program runs rain or shine.

What to Bring: Bring your apron if desired.

What to Wear: Wear “ok to get dirty” clothes as we’ll be working with food. Wear sturdy shoes as we’ll be standing for much of the time (chairs available).

Where to Meet: Registered participants will meet in the catering kitchen of Krippendorf Lodge at our Rowe Woods location. Please use the entrance on the loop driveway side of the lodge to access the kitchen. (4949 Tealtown Road, Milford, OH 45150)

Cost: Ticket fees include daily admission.

Can I purchase additional hickory bark syrup? At the close of the program, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional jars of hickory bark syrup while supplies last.
