Reclaiming the Woods: Removing Honeysuckle & Restoring Native Forest Health

DATE: Saturday 5/23/26   TIME: 10:00am - 11:30am

Registration Requirements: Preregistration required.

Intended Audience: This program is designed for adult homeowners who are looking for ideas and approaches for managing Amur bush honeysuckle on their properties.

Program Description: Amur bush honeysuckle has transformed much of Southwest Ohio’s woodland understory by suppressing native wildflowers, preventing tree regeneration, and altering wildlife habitat, resulting in forests that are less resilient and far less inviting for people and wildlife alike. In this practical and inspiring session, John Hemmerle, owner of Our Land Organics, shares a clear, step-by-step framework for managing honeysuckle and restoring native forest health on residential and small-acreage properties using entirely organic practices. Whether you have a suburban backyard with patches of honeysuckle or several acres, this class will equip you with practical tools and ecological insight to begin restoring a healthier, more resilient woodland.

You will learn:

  • how honeysuckle impacts soil, light, and native ecosystems.
  • when and how to remove it safely and effectively using non-chemical methods.
  • organic management strategies to prevent regrowth.
  • how to phase restoration projects realistically over time with real-world case studies.
  • common mistakes that lead to reinfestation.

About the Program Guide: John Hemmerle is the founder and managing director of Our Land Organics, an ecological landscape design/build company whose mission is to bring people closer to nature through innovative landscape design and management. John’s work incorporates his experience in urban planning, organic market gardening, and landscape architecture to build a future where we steward our landscapes in harmony with nature.

What to Expect:  This is an indoor talk followed by a question-and-answer session.

  • Restrooms are available throughout the program.
  • Program runs rain or shine.
